Catalyst Counselling and Workshop/Training Services

We work with clients using a holistic approach based on the individual’s needs. We treat the whole person, not just their symptoms or their specific mental health issues. We recognize that mental health is interconnected with other aspects of a person’s life, such as their physical health, relationships, and environment. We aim to address various aspects of a person’s life to promote overall wellness and healing. It involves exploring our client’s thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physical health to identify underlying causes of mental health issues and to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

We emphasize that mental health is not just about treating specific symptoms or disorders, but about addressing the individual as a whole, promoting overall wellness, and supporting individuals to change their mindset.

While mindsets can be useful for managing expectations and gathering information, they can also be unhelpful and create feelings of guilt and inadequacy, depression, anxiety, and interpersonal issues with others. According to Dr. Towery, it’s common to hold onto beliefs that were once helpful but have since turned harmful. For instance, if you were betrayed when you were young, it might have been beneficial at one point to think that others cannot be trusted. However, this belief may cause trust issues for you later in life.

The good news is that according to Dr. Towery, mindsets are changeable. You can be a lot happier if you learn the techniques for altering your mindset and overcoming your distorted thoughts.

If you can a growth mindset, meaning tou are aware that you can change over time, you would be more willing to consider, absorb, and develop from difficulties. You would be more open to accepting life’s challenges, viewing criticism as a chance for growth, and continuing to learn and develop throughout your life because failure presents less of a threat. You would also be less apt to personalize failures. For instance, if the situation described above happened to you, you might consider that the event’s atmosphere rather than your own lack of social skills was more to blame for your social difficulties.

With a fixed mindset, it would be challenging to find the motivation to overcome perceived shortcomings because even the smallest change seems daunting.

If you observed and analyzed your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors over time, you would see clearly how one can affect another, how they are all intertwined to one another, and most important of all, how they could affect your overall well-being, success, and happiness.

Stanford researcher and professor Carol Dweck, Ph.D., developed the terms “fixed mindsets” and “growth mindsets” to describe belief systems regarding your ability to alter, grow, and develop over time. You might be less susceptible to change if you think your characteristics are basically unalterable or “fixed,” as failures would be seen as inevitable and have a negative effect on your ability to succeed in the future. For instance, if you had a fixed mentality and find it difficult to make friends at a gathering, you might interpret this as proof that you would never be able to make friends, and this would in turn cause more social anxiety and avoidance.
